US-Iran war spirals across Middle East
With the US-Iran war escalating, more countries in the Middle East have—officially or unofficially—entered the fray. As the US stepped up air-strikes on Iran, it joined with Saudi Arabia to launch strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq. Iran (or the Houthis) hit Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan, where three US soldiers were killed. Saudi Arabia is building a regional military alliance to police the Red Sea, with an eye toward removal of the Houthis from power in Yemen. The US Senate again failed to pass a War Powers Resolution, while the Iran regime apparently sees it as in its political interest to extend the conflict on at least a minimal basis. Nonetheless, it appears to be quickly spiralling out of control.

UN decries Israel’s new West Bank outpost plans
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Israel’s announcement of plans to accelerate the authorization of settlement outposts under Israeli domestic law in the occupied West Bank, warning that the move constitutes a “flagrant violation” of international law. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the measures following a clash that left four Palestinians and two Israeli settlers dead at the village of Tal, near Nablus. Mosques, farmland and vehicles were set afire during the settler attacks that sparked the clash. Netanyahu simultaneously announced new Israeli military operations on the West Bank. Hundreds have since been arrested in sweeps of Palestinian villages.

Egypt: dozens detained over Gen Z online group
Amnesty International called on authorities to immediately release dozens of people detained in Egypt over their alleged involvement with Gen Z002, a Discord-based group used to discuss political issues, criticize government policies, and host dialogue about bringing meaningful change to the country. In January, Gen Z002 organized an online poll titled “Popular Referendum to Remove El-Sisi,” which asked participants whether they supported removing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi from power. The poll received more than 330,000 responses and spread across social media platforms through Arabic-language hashtags.

South Sudan in border clashes with Ugandan forces
More than 10,000 civilians are reported displaced in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria state following clashes between government troops and Ugandan forces. The fighting marks a sharp escalation in a long-running border dispute. Talks are underway at the scene to try to resolve the conflict over the contested area in Kajo-Keji county, along the frontier with Uganda’s West Nile region.

India: emergency powers amid Cockroach protests
Amnesty International condemned the decision of Delhi’s lieutenant governor to invoke Section 3(2) of India’s National Security Act (NSA), which grants police the power to hold individuals in administrative detention without procedural guarantees. The move to invoke this contentious section of the NSA comes amid mass youth protests in India, led by the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, demanding accountability over apparent examination paper leaks that affected millions of students.

Rights abuses seen in US-Ecuador joint operations
Human Rights Watch released a report detailing four attacks on Ecuadorian persons, properties and vessels that they attribute to an intensified counter-narcotics campaign led by the US with the partnership of the Ecuadorian government. The first attack took place in March on the farming community of San Martín, Sucumbíos province, and was confirmed by the US government as a partnered military operation. The remaining three incidents took place at sea, off Ecuador’s Pacific coast. They are the January disappearance of the Fiorella, an Ecuadorian fishing vessel, and March drone attacks on two other fishing vessels, La Negra Francisco Duarte II and the Don Maca. The US has denied responsibility in these maritime strikes.

AI chatbots shill for repressive regimes
New research from Meta’s Oversight Board found commercial large language models (LLMs) from Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, Meta, OpenAI and xAI are far less likely to criticize repressive leaders and governments. The research calls it “free speech infringements by proxy.” Apps and material produced by these generative AI tools could actively reproduce restrictions, including on political criticism. It’s unclear why these AI models are doing this—underscoring the need for companies to be transparent and build “human rights due diligence” into the process, before it’s too late. China, Thailand, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia topped the list of countries with the highest refusal rates when LLMs were prompted to create materials criticizing governments.

AI: the case for abolition II
The popular case against the data centers now proliferating vertiginously across the United States emphasizes the ecological imperative. As water resources shrink, forcing emergency restrictions on use across the western states, voracious water consumption by the industry is just one of the ways its advance portends imminent human extinction. Meanwhile, the industry slaps back in the courts against communities that would stand up against this advance. But Artificial Intelligence itself poses an existential threat, apart from the direct impacts of the computing power. Even respected voices in the industry warn of a high probability that AI will turn upon and destroy its creators. Seeming instances of AI going unilateral have prompted a bipartisan AI Kill Switch bill in Congress. Finally, there is the systematic cultural destruction being wrought by AI—literally shredding humankind’s legacy of literacy, to impose a reign of sheer error and idiocy. In Episode 339 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg continues to make the case for an abolitionist position on Artificial Intelligence.

U.S. ALIEN TERRORISM COURT: CONGRESS LEFT OUT TORTURE SAFEGUARD
Congress gave an extraordinary national-security court the power to order removal of adjudicated “alien terrorists” from the country, but left a dangerous gap in the adjudication of claims under the Convention Against Torture, which bars deportation to countries where the removed individual would face serious risk of torture. In a commentary for JURIST, immigration attorney Richard T. Herman breaks down the problems posed by the Alien Terrorist Removal Court under international law—a critical question now that the Trump administration has sent a case to the secretive body for the first time since Congress created it in 1996.
